Mark Fisher, theorist, author, lecturer and blogger, has died. He was the author of ‘Capitalist Realism. Is there no alternative?’.

In his book ‘Capitalist Realism. Is there no alternative?’, Mark explored how “After 1989, capitalism has presented itself as the only realistic political-economic system”. And questioned “What effects has this “capitalist realism” had on work, culture, education and mental health? Is it possible to imagine an alternative to capitalism that is not some throwback to discredited models of state control?”

In societies where neoliberalism is hidden by its anonymity, but saturates everything, the book, and Mark’s work and talks, revealed to many that “the economics and politics of free market neo-liberalism are givens rather than constructions”.

And that: “The ‘mental health plague’ in capitalist societies would suggest that, instead of being the only social system that works, capitalism is inherently dysfunctional, and that the cost of it appearing to work is very high.”

In 2011, Mark talked to Novara Media about Capitalist Realism. Listen here:
