The
London based Brainlove Records are a young record
label putting out music by some of the best underground
bands and artists.
In
June 2006 they started their 7" Singles Club.
We've been meaning to give their releases a mention
for a while. So the arrival at the Extrageographic
office of the third of their 7" singles to
be released: Applicants - Crappuccino / Filthy
along with The Open Mouths - Danny Danny was
a welcome prompt.
With
the promo CD singles came
a limited edition CD EP by Pagan
Wanderer Lu called
The Independent Scrutineer.
It will be released on the 27
of November 2006.

A
controlled experiment generally compares the results
obtained from an experimental sample against a
control sample.
My control sample is another single from our promotional
CD pile. I've picked up Sean Lennon's Dead Meat
single (this is already in the shops released
09/10/06).
I
think this Dead Meat will be rubbish. But it's
good. His high pitched Sean Lennon voice is a
bit irritating but "you get what you deserve"
is what he's singing and there's strings. Quite
dreamy and beautiful in its way.
Now
you know my scientific method.
On
the first play of Pagan Wanderer Lu's The Independent
Scrutineer I think it's quite good - it was interesting
for its whole 22 minutes.
Thanks
to Brainlove records for entertaining me.
Track
6 I like - the other stuff well, fair enough.
Interesting though - would improve with repeat
listening, I'm sure.
Then
I go to his website and it says:
"Capitalism
doesn't work. Neither does communism. What we
need is socialism under a benevolent dictator.
Like Santa."
So I play the CD again. I listened again - and
yes - quite good. Bleepiness and melody.
It's
not a blast - but I suppose it's not supposed
to be. But now my top half is dancing as I type
this. To track 2. "I'm sorry Mr Regan - but
your card has been declined" he's singing.
I am doing my desk-type-dance to this CD. That's
quite high praise. I think I would buy this. A
grow-er. It's fun. I feel happier now.
Track
4 is on now. I think it's a repeat of an earlier
track but more acoustic. But I don't like the
"waw-waw-oooos". But I like it, still.
And there's still track six to come. I like that
one. There's a bit of Arab Strap soundiness going
on here.
Now
it's track 5 "Not every suicide makes the
news" he's singing. It's gone all soundscape
- would be good with earphones. In a city. Maybe
on a train.
"Tomorrow
I die like a king" he's saying to a slowish
beat - it's track 6. Is this an indie waltz? I
like that phrase. I proclaim this to be an Indie
Waltz of an EP. Worthy of your attention, the
whole thing.
Now
it's time to cleanse my palate with Augustine's
Emergency Song, then to bed.
Goodnight.
