Eyewitness: Budapest protests
Friday 22 September 2006

From Matt, our Hungary correspondent:

"The whole political situation has been quite fascinating. I've been down to Parliament the last two nights. It's an amazing sight to see 10,000 people standing in the rain refusing to move and singing songs in unison (badly).

"It's not my country, I'm not involved and I'm usually very cynical about 'spontanous' protests - but still it is a moving experience to be there.

"In the UK when the prime minister ***** up, everyone says he should go, and then switches on a TV and watches a game show. Here they march down to Parliament en masse and say, "Are you not listening? We said go! And we will be here every night until you do!".

"The biggest difference with protests at home (UK) and this event is that these people are not crusty students with anarchy t-shirts who will be merchant bankers 20 years from now, (the footage CNN keep showing of burning police cars and stone throwers involved only 200 people in one street), they are ordinary people of all ages who aren't gonna budge."
